  • Haiti - Constitution : A few minutes before midnight, parliamentarians have changed their minds... (Update 11-05-2011)

    A few minutes before midnight, the article voted early evening, which allowed the President to hold two consecutive terms of 5 years was removed to return to the original article 134.1 which reads as follows "The President of the Republic cannot benefit from term extension. It may serve another term, only after an interval of five (5) years. In any case, it cannot run for a third term."

    Update : Sequence of events that led parliamentarians to cancel the vote, made Monday early evening, favorable to two consecutive presidential terms, to return to the initial situation, two non-consecutive presidential terms. Read more.

  • Haiti - FLASH Constitution: Dual citizenship has been voted

    Millions of Haitians from the Haitian Diaspora can now have dual nationality. Gathered Sunday in National Assembly Senators and Deputies have voted the amendment of the Constitution which prohibited the dual nationality. In an overwhelming vote: 84 votes for, 2 against and 4 abstentions. The articles 12.1, 12.2, 13, 14 and 15 (Article 15. Dual Haitian and foreign nationality is not allowed in any case) prohibiting the dual nationality have been deleted from the Constitution of 1987. Edwin Paraison, Minister of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE) declared "this is a historic step in Haiti-Diaspora relations". Read more.

  • 24th Anniversary of Haitian Constitution

    March 29 brings the anniversary of the current constitution of the Republic of Haiti, voted 24 years ago. Haiti’s Constitution of 1987 is a text that establishes the organization and functioning of the State of Haiti. This new constitution, known as “Republican” was presented to the Legislative Palace, Port-au-Prince March 10, 1987. It was ratified by the Haitian population in the constitutional referendum of March 29, 1987 which approved at 99.81% of ballots cast. Read more.
